What "Remington 700 footprint" means
It means the outside of the action matches a Remington 700. Stocks, chassis and triggers built for a 700 fit it.
Every action I sell is a 700 footprint, and so is most of the aftermarket. What it covers is narrower than most people read into it, and the gap is where wrong parts get bought.
What it gets you
- It drops into a stock or chassis inlet cut for a Remington 700, in the matching action length.
- It takes a Remington 700 pattern trigger.
- The action screws land where 700 bottom metal expects them.
What it does not get you
The barrel. Footprint is the outside of the action. The barrel thread is a separate spec, and two actions with the same footprint can take different barrels. The 787 here is exactly that: same 700 footprint, 1-1/16 x 20 thread, and nothing else in the lineup shares it. Which prefit fits what.
The magazine. AW, AICS and BDL are different cuts. A 700 footprint action can be cut for any of them, and the bottom metal you already own may not be the one it wants.
The bolt face. Nothing about the footprint says which cartridge head the bolt holds. That's on the cartridge chart.
Headspace on a prefit. A matching thread gets the barrel on. Whether it headspaces without a smith is a question for whoever cut it.

One caveat worth knowing. Impact calls the 737R, 707R, 777R and 787R a Rem 700 footprint in those words. For the Medium and Long Action NBK they publish action screw spacing instead, 6.850" on the medium. If a medium action doesn't drop into your inlet, that's the number to check first.
